Water and the environment

By using less water, companies don't need to use as much energy on extracting, pumping and filtrating water supplies, which in turn reduces the associated carbon footprint. Of all the CO2 emissions in the UK, 6 per cent derive from water use.

Calculating water consumption

Approved Document G of the Building Regulations requires that all new dwellings have a maximum water consumption of 125 litres per person, per day. This comprises internal water use of 120 litres, plus an allowance of 5 litres for outdoor water use.

Using the Water Efficiency Calculator, which is the Government's approved methodology for assessing water efficiency in new dwellings, we can calculate the projected water consumption for your development. As part of this assessment we shall give advice on the minimum acceptable efficiency for each fitting in the dwelling, thereby ensuring a pass.

Local Planning Authority targets

It is relatively common for Local Planning Authorities to stipulate a lower water consumption target as one of the Planning Conditions for a development. For example the target may be reduced to 110 l/p/d. In these instances the process for calculating the predicted water consumption remains the same, but the specification required to achieve compliance would be more rigorous.

How we can help

Quick, competitive and accurate water consumption calculations.

A complete advice and support service, comprehensive enough to make sure that you achieve compliance in the most cost-effective and feasible way possible.

One single fee, which will include:

  • The Water Efficiency calculation.
  • Building Regulation certification.
  • All the advice necessary to ensure every dwelling achieves a pass.

What can affect water usage?

  • The flow rate of showers and taps
  • The use of water softeners
  • The overflow capacity of baths
  • The use of water for washing machines
  • The use of water for dishwashers
  • The flushing capacity of toilets / WCs (single or dual flush)
  • The presence of rainwater or greywater harvesting

What happens if we fail the water calculation?

If you are at the point where the fittings have not yet been installed, we can provide you with details on alternatives that if installed can help you achieve a pass.

If the dwelling has already been fully fitted, there are still steps available that if taken can ensure that a pass is achieved. We can provide you with advice on what to do.
